Board Member Basics

As the laws and regulations that govern community associations are annually modified, learning all the rules that regulate community associations can be a daunting task for board members.

To help board members learn the intricacies of the laws, the Katzman Garfinkel law firm that represents community associations has a Law and Learning Center in Margate Florida that offers a variety of free community association education classes aimed at educating board members to improve communities.

The ‘We Speak Condo’ series is taught by Bill and Susan Raphan, who previously served as condo law educators for the Florida Office of the Condominium Ombudsman. Regardless if board members and residents have attended previous classes offered by the Raphans, Bill Raphan said laws change every year and that education is vital to running a good community association.

Upon being elected or appointed to the board, new condo board members must either complete a state-approved board member certification class either 90 days after being elected or have completed the course a year before being elected or sign an affidavit stating that they’ve read Florida Statute 718 and all of their governing documents.

To help educate new board members as well as complete the board certification course approved by the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation, the course ‘Board Member Basics,’ is held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 24, Aug. 21 and Sept. 25. at the Law and Learning Center, 5297 West Copans Road.

Other classes at the center include a course where questions are open to all subjects pertaining to condo boards and laws from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 14, How to Handle Disputes from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 17, Records Revelations from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 31
